Paint or Replace? Cabinets, Siding, Trim and Decks

Paint or replace in Santa Rosa, CA: worked answers for kitchen cabinets, old wood siding, dry rot, soft trim, gray deck boards and chalky aluminum siding.

Paint or Replace? Cabinets, Siding, Trim and Decks

Paint protects sound material. It does not repair material that has failed. Most paint-or-replace questions come down to finding out which one you have. Here is how we think about the common cases around Santa Rosa.

The dollar figures on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Sonoma County labor rates, the paint chosen and the condition of your own surfaces move a real price up or down. Last checked October 2026.

Should I paint or replace my kitchen cabinets?

Paint them if the boxes are solid, the doors are flat and you like the layout. Replace them if the boxes are water damaged, the shelves sag, the drawers have failed or the layout does not work.

The published national ranges are $2,000 to $6,500 to paint and $4,500 to $15,000 to replace. Paint changes the color. It does not fix swollen particleboard under a sink or add the drawers you wish you had.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace old siding?

It is cheaper to paint old siding than to replace it, as long as the siding is sound. HomeGuide publishes direct comparisons only for vinyl and aluminum: painting vinyl $1,500 to $5,000 against replacing at $4,800 to $11,100, and painting aluminum $1,500 to $7,000 against replacing at $6,300 to $20,100.

No national comparison is published for wood or stucco, which are the common walls in Santa Rosa. The rule is the same though. If the boards are solid and flat, paint is the better value. If many are split, cupped or rotten, paint is money spent on a wall that still needs replacing.

My wood siding is faded, cracked and 30 years old. Paint or replace?

Faded wood siding with surface cracks can nearly always be painted. Age alone is not the test. Redwood siding on Santa Rosa houses much older than 30 years is still doing its job where it has been kept painted.

Press a screwdriver into the worst boards, mostly at the bottom edges and on the south and west sides. If the wood is firm, we scrape, sand, prime the bare areas and paint. Plywood panel siding from the 1970s is the exception to watch. Once its layers start to separate along the bottom, those sheets need replacing.

My wood siding has some rot. Paint it or replace it first?

Replace or repair the rotten parts first, then paint. Paint over rot traps the moisture and the rot keeps spreading under the new coating.

Rot in Santa Rosa usually shows where winter rain sits: the bottom course near the ground, around window sills, behind leaking gutters and where sprinklers hit the wall. A few boards is a small repair done as part of the paint job. Widespread rot means the siding question comes before the paint question.

The trim is rotting or soft. Fill and paint, or new trim?

Small soft spots in trim can be dug out, hardened and filled. Trim that is soft through most of its thickness or along most of its length should be replaced.

Fascia boards, window sills and the bottoms of door casings fail first. A new piece of primed trim is often cheaper than the labor to rebuild a badly rotted one with filler, and it lasts longer.

Can a painter patch dry rot with epoxy or do I need a carpenter?

A painter can patch small areas of dry rot with a two-part epoxy wood filler after removing the soft wood. It works well on sills, trim ends and corners where the damage is shallow.

You need a carpenter when the rot is in something structural, such as a post, a beam, a deck ledger or framing behind the siding, or when whole lengths of board have gone. We point out what we find during the estimate and say which kind of repair it is.

My deck boards are gray and splintering. Stain or replace?

Gray, splintering boards can be stained if they are still solid. Gray is only sun damage on the surface. Washing, light sanding and a penetrating stain bring most decks back.

Replace boards that are soft, cracked right through, cupped badly or loose at the fasteners. Our long dry summers split deck boards and our wet winters rot the ends, so many decks need a handful of new boards and then stain on the rest.

My aluminum siding is chalky. Paint it or cover it?

Chalky aluminum siding can be painted. The chalk is the old factory finish breaking down. It has to be washed off fully, and then a quality acrylic paint bonds well and can last 5 to 10 years by the published figure.

Aluminum siding is not common in Santa Rosa, but some mid-century homes and mobile homes have it. Covering or replacing it only makes sense if it is badly dented or you want a different look.

Is a 20-year-old deck worth painting or staining?

A 20-year-old deck is worth staining if the frame underneath is sound. Check the posts, the ledger board against the house and the joists before spending money on the surface.

If the structure is solid and most boards are firm, cleaning and staining is good value. On an old deck we generally suggest stain over paint, because paint on worn horizontal boards tends to peel. If the frame is rotten, put the money toward a new deck.
