Painting sound cabinets changes a kitchen for much less than new boxes and doors. It only works when the prep is right. These are the questions we hear most in Santa Rosa kitchens.
The dollar figures on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Sonoma County labor rates, the paint chosen and the condition of your own surfaces move a real price up or down. Last checked October 2026.
How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?
The national figure is $2,000 to $6,500 for an average kitchen. HomeGuide lists $1,000 to $3,500 for a small kitchen and $5,000 to $10,000 for a large one. Per piece it gives $70 to $125 per door and $30 to $110 per drawer front.
The count of doors and drawers, the condition of the old finish and whether the boxes are painted inside all change the price. We count and inspect before quoting.
How much for 20 or 30 cabinet doors and drawers?
Using the published $70 to $125 per door, 20 cabinet doors come to $1,400 to $2,500 and 30 cabinet doors to $2,100 to $3,750. Drawer fronts are extra at $30 to $110 each, so ten drawers add $300 to $1,100.
That is arithmetic from national per-piece figures, not a quote from us. The face frames and end panels also have to be painted, and they are part of our written price.
Is it cheaper to paint, reface or replace cabinets?
Painting is the cheapest of the three. The published national ranges are $2,000 to $6,500 to paint, $5,000 to $13,000 to reface and $4,500 to $15,000 to replace.
Refacing puts new doors and a new skin on the old boxes. Replacing gives you new boxes and a new layout. Painting keeps everything and changes the color, so it suits kitchens where the layout works and the doors are solid.
Painting or refinishing cabinets: what is the difference in cost?
Refinishing is published at $1,500 to $4,500 for an average kitchen, a little under the $2,000 to $6,500 for painting. Refinishing means stripping or sanding and applying new stain and clear coat, so the wood grain still shows.
Painting covers the wood with a solid color. If you like the wood and only the finish is worn, refinish. If you want white, gray, green or navy, you are painting.
Are 1990s oak cabinets worth painting, and can oak go white?
Yes on both counts, if the doors and boxes are solid. Oak cabinets from the 1980s and 1990s are in a great many Santa Rosa kitchens and they are usually well built.
Oak has open grain, and it will show through paint as a fine texture unless a grain filler is used first. Some people like that look. If you want a flat, smooth white, ask for grain filling and say so at the estimate, because it adds a step.
Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?
Laminate can be painted when it is firmly bonded, cleaned, scuff-sanded and coated with a bonding primer. Thermofoil is harder. If the vinyl skin is lifting at the edges, paint will not hold it down, and those doors are better replaced.
We check each door. Sound thermofoil can sometimes be painted, but we will tell you plainly if we think it will not last.
Spray or brush for cabinets, and are doors sprayed off site?
Spraying gives cabinet doors the smoothest finish, and brushing and rolling suits the face frames that stay in the kitchen. Many cabinet painters remove the doors and drawer fronts and spray them flat in a shop or a masked-off area, then brush or spray the frames in place.
Ask us how we would handle your kitchen. It depends on the space you have and the finish you want.
Can cabinets be painted without removing the doors?
They can, but painting without removing the doors gives a poorer result. Paint builds up at the hinges, edges get missed and runs form on vertical surfaces. Taking doors off, numbering them and painting them flat is the normal method for a finish that lasts.
How long does cabinet painting take and can I use the kitchen?
Cabinet painting takes 3 to 5 days for an average kitchen, by the published figure. You can use your kitchen for most of that time, with limits. The sink, stove and fridge stay connected. Cabinet contents need to be cleared from any box being painted inside, and counters are covered during work hours.
New cabinet enamel is dry to the touch within hours but stays soft for a while. Treat doors gently for the first few weeks.
Will painted cabinets chip or peel?
Painted cabinets can chip where they take hard knocks, but they should not peel. Peeling means the prep failed: grease left on the surface, no sanding or the wrong primer.
Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking oil and hand oils, mostly around handles and above the stove. Degreasing, sanding and a bonding primer are what make the paint stick. Small chips at edges can be touched up.
How long does cabinet paint last, compared with a factory finish?
Painted cabinets last 8 to 15 years by the published national figure. A factory finish is baked or catalyzed in controlled conditions and is harder than anything applied on site, so it usually outlasts a repaint.
How long your paint lasts depends on prep, the product and how hard the kitchen is used. Doors near the sink and the trash pull-out wear first.
What paint do pros use on cabinets for a smooth finish?
For a smooth finish on cabinets, professionals use a hard-drying enamel made for trim and cabinets, not wall paint. Waterborne alkyd and urethane-modified enamels level out as they dry, so brush marks settle, and they cure harder than standard latex.
We do not name a single brand here. The right product depends on the surface and the color. Ask us what we plan to use on yours and why.
I painted my cabinets myself and they look bad. Can a pro fix them?
Yes, in most cases. If you painted your cabinets yourself and they are sticky, streaky or peeling, the fix depends on what is underneath. Paint that is well stuck but rough can be sanded smooth, primed and refinished.
Paint that scratches off with a fingernail has to come off, because new paint over a weak layer fails too. That means stripping or heavy sanding and costs more than painting bare doors. We test a door before we price it.
